An Overseas Letter, Albert Dorrington , single work column (p. 27)
The Clermont Tragedy, Archibald Meston , single work essay
Meston begins this article by referring to recent tragic floods at Clermont, which he compares with the wrecks of the 'Quetta' and the 'Gothenburg.' He offers a summary history of Clermont, beginning with Leichhardt's discovery of Peak Downs and his unsuccessful second expedition to the area in 1846. The article describes massacres of settlers at Hornet Bank and Cullin-la-ringga, and the discovery of copper in 1861. Charles Hardy Buzacott's founding of the first newspaper and his later career as editor of the Rockhampton Bulletin and the Brisbane Courier are mentioned. Meston concludes by advising the rebuilding of Clermont on safer ground.
