AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Captain Jeffrey Seaforth is prevented by poverty from marrying Lady Myra Langdon - the only obstacle between him and a sizeable estate and title being his handsome cousin, a rising naval officer, Cecil Wyngold. Cecil is murdered after succeeding to his title, and Jeffrey succeeds to the title and marries Lady Myra. Cecil's friends suspect Jeffrey of murdering him. 21 years later in 1870 Ben Burton and Dr Dick Vivian, old friends of Cecil's, and Ben's nephew Arthur Ashton are returning from India on the same ship as Jeffrey and his son Philip and the beautiful Rosalind Archer. Rosalind and Arthur fall in love but J. intends that she should marry Philip. He concocts a plan to murder Arthur with arsenic but poisons his own son Philip instead. P. survives but J. kills himself once he discovers A. is Cecil's son and thus true heir to his title. Romance, tragedy and the revelation of secrets follow. (PB)
