A child is separated from her rough guardian by an uncle who seeks to claim her inheritance on the first wet Sydney Christmas Eve. Fifteen years later they are reunited, she is to be married, and her uncle and accomplice are punished on a very different hot, dry Christmas Eve in the bush. Includes a vivid scene of death in a hollow tree in a bushfire. (PB)
