The New South Wales Examiner reports on a meeting of George Arden's creditors which resulted in the decision that the Gazette and its printing establishment would be offered for sale. A notice to this effect appeared in the Gazette on 7 September under Arden's hand.

In 1844, the copyright of the Port Phillip Gazette was sold to Mr [Thomas] McCombie, a former proprietor of the newspaper, for 80 pounds. Mr Strode, who had begun the paper, went on to begin the Port Phillip Gazetteer.
