Editor's note: 'Our aim is twofold. First, we want to draw attention to the growing production in Australia of writing and art which draws on Eastern as well as Western traditions and views our society from different perspectives. Secondly, we also want to introduce into the rhetoric of a harmonious multiculturalism a note of discord, suggesting a re-examination of past and present cultural practices which does not sweep under the carpet the difficulties (social, cultural and political) arising from these encounters.'
