Title refers to childish pronunciation of 'Gert' and 'Joe'.

Extracts from eight undated reviews of this novel appear in the back of The Lonely Crossing (1905) and appear also on page 29 of the issues of The Dawn from February to July 1905. One of the reviews is in fact from the Australian Town and Country Journal for 1 February 1905. This evidence would support a publication date of late 1904 or early 1905, rather than the 189? estimate in the Mitchell library catalogue and other bibliographic sources. National Library of Australia copy has handwritten note: 'Rec. Dec. 30 1904.'
