  • Author note: Note for the Unclassical: She was one of the fifty daughters of Danaus, King of Argos, who married their fifty cousins. The brides were commanded by their father for family reasons to kill their husbands on the wedding night. They all obeyed except Hypermnestra who assisted her husband to escape. The shades of the other forty-nine were condemned to spend eternity in trying to fill a bottomless vessel with water. Horace deals with the topic in his elevated style. (Odes III, XI)
