Epigraph: A lady an explorer? a traveller in skirts? The notion's just a trifle too seraphic: Let them stay and mind the babies, or hem our ragged shirts; But they musn't, can't, and shan't be geographic.... To The Royal Geographic Society from Punch, London, June 1893.

Dedication: For my sister, Margaret Louise (Bluey), one of the last passengers to sail on the R.M.S. Stratheden, famous among the '5 Straths' of the P&O Australian Fleet and in remembrance of the wanderer's escorts - the work horses, mules, camels, bullocks, dogs and on some journeys, cats - whose transport and protection were essential for travel within Australia and its Territories for so many.
