Poems as Illegal Immigrants : an Introduction, Yu Ouyang , single work criticism
Introducing this selection of Chinese poetry, Ouyang Yu speaks of the diversity and vitality of modern Chinese writing. He describes this selection as poems which defy pigeon-holing, which are characteristically anti-Western, sexy and political, although not about Western-style democracy; poems which open up a new world for us to see. Responding to something in himself which refuses to be colonized by the West, epitomized by the English language, he smuggles them in, like unwanted illegal immigrants, and 'give[s] back what has been rejected, in your face'.
