AbstractHistoryArchive Description
'Queensland is an idea whose time has come. The state is experiencing unprecedented economic growth, developing a new self-confidence and playing a more prominent role in national and regional affairs. The new government slogan, the 'Smart State', cleverly capitalises on changing internal and external perceptions of Queensland, as well as setting an innovative agenda for the future. Premier Peter Beattie points to 'the climate of innovation, education and training, coupled with our low State taxes, high standard of living, great lifestyle and sunny climate' as a particularly attractive base from which to 'develop Queensland as an Asia-Pacific hub for the new industries of the 21st Century'.' single work
essay
— Review of Talkin' Up to the White Woman : Aboriginal Women and Feminism 2000 single work criticism ;'Aileen Moreton-Robinson's Talkin' Up to the White Woman: Indigenous Women and Feminism, is, as the author herself points out, a book that many white people may find uncomfortable. It is the first book-length study of the relationship between Indigenous women and white feminism in Australia, and, as such, is an important and timely contribution to Indigenous studies, gender studies and the emerging field of whiteness studies.' review
— Review of Before I Sleep : Memoirs of a Modern Police Commissioner 2001 single work autobiography ;'Many Queenslanders will remember Ray Whitrod as the state's Police Commissioner between 1970 and 1976. Yet as this autobiography reveals, his police career was not defined by his controversial period of office in the Sunshine State. It spanned many decades and covered several jurisdictions.' [Review] Below These Mountains : The Adventures of John Henry Mills - Pioneer Photographer and Gold Miner,
single work
review
— Review of Below These Mountains : The Adventures of John Henry Mills : Pioneer Photographer and Gold Miner 2001 single work biography ;'In Below These Mountains, Lyall Ford - great-grandson of John Henry and Mary Ann Louisa Mills - has extensively researched and meticulously sifted through the 'jigsaw puzzle' pieces of his Mills family ancestry to put together a very readable and thoroughly researched account of both the Mills family and the establishment and eventual demise of the Queensland gold mining township of Mount Britton in Mackay's hinterland. Although this book is ostensibly designed as a detailed record of the Mills family, it is not a laborious read aimed only at the family members: it also fleshes out the social situations of the era.'
