Using an interview with Alfred Deakin in the Melbourne Argus as a starting point, the author examines the last seven years of Furphy's life, a period of personal contentment but "artistic decline" and disappointment at the reception of his novel. Analyses Such is Life as a "cultural barometer of ... the depth and strength of the Australian literati's moral commitment to their own country" (p.35) and discusses the content of the novel and Furphy's attitude to literature and novel writing .
