The Cell is set in a convent of an order which cares for delinquent girls; girls who are considered by court and welfare authorities to be worth the risk of more temperate treatment. Although they are released into the bond of the nuns rather than being sent to prison, in appearance the convent is little different. It too is a place of high walls, shadows, locked doors and carried keys.
