Works about this Work

Fictions of Development : Henry Handel Richardson's The Getting of Wisdom Catherine Cecilia Pratt , 1995 single work criticism
— Appears in: Antipodes , June vol. 9 no. 1 1995; (p. 3-9) The AustLit Anthology of Criticism 2010; (p. 57)
Pratt considers the narrative convergence of popular romance and Bildungsroman in The Getting of Wisdom and shows how each genre "structures its narrative meaning through the representation of gender". Pratt argues that Laura's development is not stablized by gender and the resulting narrative, while at times matching romance or Bildungsroman, does not produce a strong structure for either, reflecting Richardson's rejection of those genres as recepticles of her own story.
The Reviewer and Miss Robertson Hanne K. Bock , 1984 single work criticism
— Appears in: Australian Literary Studies , May vol. 11 no. 3 1984; (p. 404-408)
The Female Kunstlerroman : Richardson versus Bjornson Carol Franklin , 1983 single work criticism
— Appears in: Southerly , December vol. 43 no. 4 1983; (p. 422-436)
