AbstractHistoryArchive Description

The author spent the period covered in this diary as war correspondent in New Guinea for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and the London Daily Telegraph. The Diary is an historical document as well as a personal record of the author and gives a day by day account leading to the Japanese occupation of New Guinea and the imposition of martial law in Papua and New Guinea.

  • Short extracts from New Guinea Diary were published in The Australian newspaper's 'The War on Our Doorstep' series in 2002.
  • Dedication:
    This book is dedicated to comrades-in-arms,
    both American and Australian,
    who fought in New Guinea
    for the way of life they
    loved; who in fighting
    gave the lie to axis propa-
    gandists who said that
    democracy was decadent;
    who in dying levied a toll
    on the rest of mankind -

    in vain.
