Author's Preface: The title of this volume, it is hoped, indicates the scope intended. The sketches that follow are designed merely to bridge the gap between the sternly historical and the frankly sensational existing records of the bushranging era. Whilst adhering in all cases to generally accepted data, the authors have attempted to introduce the leaven of an individual understanding and reconstruction of periods and personalities which cannot reasonably be denied a place in the romance of Australasian development.
