Notes

  • The book version of 1878, with the new title Ups and Downs, has an ending different from that in the serial version. The 1890 re-issue reverts to the original title but retains the 1878 last chapter. (Paul de Serville Rolf Boldrewood: A Life 2000).
  • According to Paul de Serville (Rolf Boldrewood: A Life 2000), Browne first used the pseudonym 'Rolf Boldrewood' for the serial publication of this novel.
  • Dai Yin's thesis 'The Representation of Chinese People in Australian Literature' (1994) notes the inclusion of Chinese characters in this work.
