The manuscript version of this work held in the Campbell Howard Collection (Dixson Library, University of New England) has the sub-title 'An Episode of the Depression'.

In Playing with Ideas (1999), Susan Pfisterer and Carolyn Pickett state 'Marjorie McLeod worked extensively as a director as well as a playwright and this is evident in the original manuscript [of A Shillingsworth] which includes a sketch of the stage plan and numerous directions for stage business and offstage sound effects and conversations.'
