AbstractHistoryArchive Description

This legend of Gaiya, the giant devil-dingo, belongs to several tribes in the lower Cape York Peninsula. The boss of Gaiya was old Eelgin the grasshopper woman who used Gaiya to hunt and kill men for food. One day Eelgin sent Gaiya in pursuit of two young Chooku-chooku men (or butcher-bird brothers) who happened to pass by her camp. The men ran and ran with Gaiya howling in pursuit after them. Eventually the brothers managed to spear Gaiya and kill him. The spirit of Gaiya was angry and bit Eelgin on the nose and that is why grasshoppers have the same marks on their noses to this day. The Giant Devil Dingo is an adaptation of Dick Roughsey's book of the same title which retells an Aboriginal legend about Gaiya, the giant devil dingo, who once roamed the Australian wilds killing people for food, and who later, as the dog, became man's best friend and helper.

Notes

  • Also available as part of a short film (The Rainbow Serpent and 2 Other Stories, 1982) and as part of a kit containing a filmstrip, a sound cassette and notes (The Giant Devil Dingo, 1977).
  • A reading of the story (including the original illustrations) was made by the Northern Territory Department of Education in the 1970s, and is available to view on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QKyJdAsrj4 (Sighted: 2/9/2015)

In order to decode them readers need higher levels of visual literacy. In researching this the author has created a framework for evaluating visual narrative structure in picture books. This was then developed and tested on a total of 145 Australian picture books, with special focus given to the works of Ron Brooks, Dick Roughsey and Percy Trezise, Mem Fox, Donna Rawlins, Gary Crew and Bob Graham.
