Furphy and Romance : "Such is Life" Reconsidered,
single work
criticism
biography
Knight provides the first sustained examination of Furphy's/Collins' attitude to the conventions of romance. Comparing the story of Warrigal Alf and Nosey Alf with Ouida's Strathmore, Knight identifies a parody of the romantic tale. Romantic conventions such as disguise and disfigurement are employed in the Nosey Alf story and Collins' failure to comprehend that Nosey is a woman reflects the "Delacy Evans" character of popular novels. Knight concludes that Such is Life should be considered in terms of its use of literary conventions.
