'When Clancy McPhee is uprooted from a sordid Sydney slum and, through a series of odd circumstances, transplanted to a remote corner of western Queensland, she finds herself not only forced to provide moral support for a drunken malingerer old enough to be her father, but mistress of his cattle station homestead. Her resentment against the loneliness and isolation of bush life is countered by her grudging affection for a small boy...The cattle station, however, brings out all Clancy's resources, resilience and courage, and in the end she wins the happiness she has deserved.'
