AbstractHistoryArchive Description
Set in wartime Australia, The Fear is the story of Danny Jordan, a young Catholic boy who is compelled to face the problems set by adults in an adult world. Singapore has fallen, the war could at any time explode along the northern coastline and Danny and his mother, Stell, move into the city. Next door to them live the Mantles, through whom Danny is to learn more about life, death - and about fear - than is right for a small boy. (Source: dustjacket, 1965 Cassell edition)

criticism
— Appears in: Australian Literary Studies , May vol. 9 no. 1 1979; (p. 3-13) "Acknowledges Keneally's seeming contradiction of being both a popular and serious novelist. Yet argues that in spite of the popular elements in his work, Keneally shows a keen awareness of the individual's precarious position in 'the scheme of things,' and directs each novel toward a search for surety amid uncertainties, for comprehension of the inexplicable, for an affirmation of decency and integrity" (Annotation in R. Ross, Australian Literary Criticism - 1945-1988, 241). -
