The play is based on the life of Ric Throssell's father, Hugo ('Jim') Throssell, VC.
A note in the MS copy held at the Fryer Library states : 'For Valour was written in 1958 with the assistance of a Commonwealth Literary Fund Fellowship. In February, 1960, it was commended in the Mary Gilmore Awards for the previous year.'
For Valour was first performed at the Canberra Repertory Theatre under the sponsorship of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust in August 1960. The first performance was directed by Ric Throssell.
