'Face to Face takes up the issue in more serious vein. Glen is in his mid-20s, all brawn and not much brain. All he ever wanted to do was build scaffolding. Then one day in anger he rams the boss's Mercedes. Glen elects to have a judicial community conference in place of a trial, and the audience become witnesses to an emotional debate which draws out a trail of responsibility extending from Glen to his work-mates, his mother, his employer and to society itself.' 'Face to Face is adapted from David Williamson's play which is in turn based on the transcripts from real conflict resolution sessions.
'The story is about a young scaffold construction worker who is charged with assaulting his boss. By the end of the film, all our assumptions about guilt and blame are turned on their heads. As 10 people sit in a room discussing the turn of events that brought our protagonist to breaking point, twists and surprises reveal that all is not quite as simple as it seems.'

Visions of Restorative Justice in Theatre, Theory and Practice

— Appears in: Australasian Drama Studies , May no. 74 2019; (p. 98-128) ''Restorative justice' is often used as an umbrella term for a range of processes - including victim-offender mediation, youth justice conferencing and circle sentencing - through which legal reformers have sought to move away from a retributive model of justice, to encourage offenders to take more responsibility for their actions, to offer victims a voice that is often lacking in courtroom proceedings, and to promote reintegration of offenders into a community of care. With a view to offering a sympathetic critique of restorative justice theory, we read David Williamson's trilogy of 'docudramas' ('Face to Face, A Conversation' and 'Charitable Intent') against the observations of fieldwork carried out in the New South Wales juvenile justice system. This comparative analysis shows how Williamson's representation of restorative justice aligns better with the sort of ideal-typical descriptions of practice that restorative justice practitioners offer in their training manuals than it does with actual practice.'(Publication abstract)
