Notes

  • Epigraph: Let others chant of battle and such wreaths as Glory gave; I would rather sing the praises of the dew that dips the daisies, Of the wind that stirs the wattle and the foam that flecks the wave...... W.H.Ogilvie.

      • Introduction by J.N.M. 'Because then of this blessed absence of self-consciousness in these poems; because they come from a Colony that may reasonably be expected to ignore Oxford cliques and conventions of the Bodley Head; and because they express the emotions of a man of action who has lived a hard open life under the stars; for these three reasons I commend this selection to all lovers of poetry, in the hope that they will discover for themselves further merits to justify in England the approval and affection of Australia.' p.11.
      • Three of the poems have an Australian reference: 'Rainbows and Witches', 'Queensland Opal' and 'God-Speed!'.
