This paper historicises and clarifies major differences between Natural History Writing, and Nature Writing, through examples from early Tasmanian writing thus demonstrating the existence of an early and active literary ecoconsciousness. The paper then moves from a consideration of the restrictions of the belle lettristic (or essay) form, to ecowriting in prose fiction. ... James McQueen's Hook's Mountain (1982) and Charlotte I.
