Author's Introduction: This book has its origins in the Martin D'Arcy Memorial Lectures delivered at Campion Hall, Oxford, in 1984. Given carte blanche as to subject and treatment, I moved from the seminar on 'Studies in Autobiography' which Professor Chris Wallace-Crabbe and I had been conducting for some years at the University of Melbourne....Most of the figures at whom I looked had not engaged us much, though certainly a number of the general questions had been touched upon...(pp.1-3).
