  • Acknowledgements: All poems except two were taken from the Gallimard editions of Alcools and Calligrammes. 'Inscription pour le tombeau du peintre Henri Rousseau' is from Le Guetteur Melancolique (Gallimard). 'Souvenir du Douanier' is quoted in Dora Vallier's Henri Rousseau, Thames and Hudson, London 1967 (p.1).
  • These English versions were developed by Geoff Page from (with one exception) the literal translations of Wendy Coutts and were then checked over by a native French speaker. (From the Preface). Geoff Page and Wendy Coutts (p.vi).
  • Each poem in the selection appears in two versions, the translation from the French by Wendy Coutts and a poetic re-working of that translation by Geoff Page.
