Maudie, a middle-aged woman with an intellectual disability, lives with her mother. She seeks refuge in fruit trees, sometimes scuffling with children who come to steal grapes and figs.

Maudie is not well accepted by the community. Her mother is impatient with her; when they go grocery shopping, a man denies them a lift and the shopkeeper dislikes her.
