Author's note: In the wave of revolutions which swept Europe in 1848, Ireland again attempted resistance, but the enfeebled condition of the people, coupled with confusion of leadership and contradictory instructions, resulted in failure. Among the leaders to suffer transportation was William Smith O'Brien, MP for Limerick, who was confined to Maria Island off the East Coast of Tasmania, his wife and children at home in Ireland.
