Author's note: 'North Grafton, Clarence River.'

This poem was initially published in the Sydney Morning Herald in March 1862, titled 'Song'. It subsequently appeared in Bell's Life in Sydney and then in Poems and Songs, titled 'The River and the Hill'. The version that appeared in the London Athenaeum was also titled 'The River and the Hill', however it omitted the third verse of the original Sydney Morning Herald version, and had significant textual variations in the second verse.
