Joyce Hall a Thanakwith woman, was a poet, singer, teacher, activist and community leader at Napranum on Western Cape York. She was born at Old Mapoon, near the top of Cape York, and her writing explored the indignities that go with the loss of Aboriginal land. The original Mapoon village was razed, and Joyce and some of her people were relocated to shacks on other land. They lost their hunting grounds, and some of their sacred places were destroyed. Hall has spent many years travelling within Australia and overseas campaigning for the return of tribal lands.
