BiographyHistory

Screenwriter and film and television director Michael Rymer entered the University of Southern California in 1981 to study film. He enrolled in two-year training program for actors in 1986, and during his study wrote and directed two plays, 'Darkness at Noon' and 'Ensenada', both staged at the Los Angeles Art Theatre.

In 1989 Rymer wrote Dead Sleep, a psychological thriller which was made into a film by Village Roadshow in Queensland in 1990. Several other films set in Australia followed, including Electric Dreaming which was staged in the outback.

Rymer has also directed several films and television programs in America. In 2011, he was nominated for an IF Award in the Best Direction category for his direction of Face to Face.

'Face to Face is adapted from David Williamson's play which is in turn based on the transcripts from real conflict resolution sessions.

'The story is about a young scaffold construction worker who is charged with assaulting his boss. By the end of the film, all our assumptions about guilt and blame are turned on their heads. As 10 people sit in a room discussing the turn of events that brought our protagonist to breaking point, twists and surprises reveal that all is not quite as simple as it seems.'

Protagonists Kate and Harry are outpatients at a psychiatric clinic: Kate believes that her guardian angel, Astral, is sending her messages through the television game show Wheel of Fortune and Harry is schizophrenic. After they meet and fall in love, Kate and Harry move away from their carers and attempt to face their adversities together. However, their new-found independence begins to draw them into an intense and emotion-driven world of their own. Over-confidence eventually leads to them stopping their medication, which is when the real struggle begins.
