After serving with the British Army during World War II, Roby worked on a passenger liner and operated an insurance business before immigrating to Australia. Following his wife's death, on Roby's 60th birthday, he was forced to confront his illiteracy. He studied through an adult learning centre, learnt to read and write and then began his writing career.
