BiographyHistory

Film critic and award winning science fiction writer Robin Pen was the founding editor of Eidolon : The Journal of Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy. His published works, which includes The Secret Life of Rubber-Suit Monsters (a book of humorous criticism aimed at fantastic cinema) have appeared in Twenty3: A Miscelleny (1998), Short Stories for Short Attention Spans (2000), Hacks to the Max (2002) and Agog! Fantastic Fiction (2002). Pen is also co-editor of Daikaiju! anthologies (with Robert Hood).

Daikaiju, meaning 'giant monsters,' is a predominantly Australian anthology with a few international authors. It comprises stories that fall within the specualtive fiction genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror, along with several works that fall into the category of humour. An essay titled "A Brief History of the Larger-than-Life" by Brian Thomas is also included.

Non-Australian contributors are: J. M. Shiloh, Cody Goodfellow, D. G. Valdron, Skip Peel, Eric Shapiro, Paul Finch, George Thomas, Stephen Mark Rainey, Doug Wood, Frank Wu, and Brian Thomas.

Taking its name from the tiny winged creature found on ancient Greek vases, Eidolon: The Journal of Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy was conceived by a group of individuals who came together for the first time during Swancon XV, the fifteenth annual Western Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention. Published out of North Perth, Western Australia by Eidolon Publications, itself founded by Jonathan Strahan and Jeremy G. Byrne, a total of 26 issues were published between 1990 and 2000.

Issues 1-4 were edited by the Eidolon Editorial Committee comprising Byrne, Strahan, Robin Pen, Richard Scriven, Strahan, Keira McKenzie and Chris Stronach. Issues 5-24 were jointly edited by Scriven, Strahan and Byrne. Strahan and Byrne continued as editorial partners through issues 25/26-28, and Byrne was the sole editor of the final issue 25/26.
