BiographyHistory

An American social realist whose books combined topics of sex and violence with representations of working-class America, particularly the southern states. Caldwell's novels criticised poverty, ignorance, racism and tenant farming and many of them were banned from public libraries in the US. His most famous novel Tobacco Road was released by the Literature Censorship Board but God's Little Acre was banned by Customs in 1933. Journeyman was placed on restricted circulation in Australia in 1941.
