Yvonne Smith completed a BA (1974) and MA (Hons) (1985) in English from the University of Sydney. She has taught in schools in Indonesia, Sydney and the Blue Mountains. In 1995 she completed the M Ed Admin (University of New England). She was Principal of Northholm Grammar School, Arcadia (NSW) from 1995 to 2008. Her doctorate (University of Sydney, 2009) investigated the poetry and prose of David Malouf. She is now (2009) an independent scholar and part-time tutor in English at the University of Sydney.
