Denis McMahon grew up in Western New South Wales and New Guinea. He was educated at Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore) and the University of New South Wales. As well as being a poet, he has been heavily involved in the Chess Association of Western Australia in executive and administration roles (for example, President and Secondary School Coordinator). He is also an accomplished tournament chess player. McMahon has represented Australia in debating and has taught English and Literature at Applecross Senior High School in Western Australia.
