Though not uncommon for me particularly this hinges on an inheritance of familial experience, and I am predisposed to regard that which is missing as a great and gaping hole in which one aught never discern a silver lining, but rather a direct and literal loss, since our lives have been lived as much in the absence of things as in the presence of what has come to replace them.' It starts with a title (it is part of a sequence) or maybe a number, and then: I was afraid of Easter / stuffed with walnuts and dates / moulded then sugared / (why mould if you’re sugaring?). I forget the next part of the verse, which concludes: moulding and sugaring and Eastering Arabic cakes. Even approaching ninety and losing her sight, Ellen, my grandmother, would make hundreds of the cakes I am writing about, called ma’amoul (and I have subsequently learnt we really did Easter those cakes, cakes also made for Muslim festivals such as Eid and Jewish festivals such as Purim).' (Introduction)

'It is a prejudice that I think we can already see in Herodotus that there is something prized but also irredeemable about a Gorgon’s head, and in particular Medusa’s mortal one, and it treads a narrow bridge between arrestingly beautiful (illustrations of which coalesce around neo-spiritual work) and grotesque (a few of these, but classically, Caravaggio). And though I recognise that the preceding references are already unwieldy it would be impossible not to mention, (in passing), the utility of the sublime which I think helps to bridge the slippages between gorgeous (I see now, close to Gorgon) and terrible, which are adjectives used (at times interchangeably) to convey the Medusa.'  (Introduction)
