Alsop began her career in art as a children's book illustrator and later developed a reputation for her line drawing, watercolour and oil paintings, wood engravings, etchings, prints, book plates and portraiture. She studied at the National Gallery School of Painting between 1898 and 1905 which was interrupted by a family trip to Europe during 1899 and 1900. In July 1910, Alsop collaborated with Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (q.v.) in a commission to paint wall panels on two children's wards in the Melbourne Homoeopathic Hospital.

Alsop contributed regularly to Victorian Artists' Society exhibitions between 1903 and 1926. Another European trip enabled her to study wood engraving at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and painting in Paris under Andre Lhote between 1928 and 1929. Returning to Melbourne in 1930, she exhibited her European work. Her Gondolas, Venice 1931 is held by the National Gallery of Australia.

Alsop was one of twelve founding members of the Contemporary Art Group in 1932 and was a founding member of the Independent Group of Artists. Throughout the 1930s she regularly lectured and exhibited at the Lyceum Club, Melbourne.
