  • German novelist, best known as the author of his anti-war novel Im Westen nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front,1929) which became a world bestseller.
  • The July 1932 issue of The Home contains a brief reference to Eric [sic] Remarque, noting that the German author of All Quiet on the Western Front, 'lives in Switzerland. At Berlin the Customs officials have taken possession of his bank account. The reason being that Remarque is supposed to have smuggled over to Switzerland the proceeds of his famous book which has brought him a profit of £25,000.'
