BiographyHistory

According to E. Morris Miller and Frederick T. Macartney in Australian Literature: A Bibliography to 1938...Extended to 1950 (1956), Safroni-Middleton wandered the South Pacific, Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia occasionally earning a living as an orchestral musician. At one time he was first violin at Her Majesty's Theatre, Sydney. He was also a composer with many published compositions. Other writings include Subconscious Philosophy published with Dante Lorenzo's Love's Parliament (ca.1948) and The Philosophy of Love. Works attributed to Safroni-Middleton in the frontmatter of The Dreaming Skull but not found elsewhere include The Two Shelleys, The Forest Lovers, The Great Escape!, Art Gone Native and Deep Moving Waters. The Vandyke Beard (1941) mentioned in correspondence by a relative of Middleton's has likewise not been found. Middleton's reminiscences record meetings with Robert Louis Stevenson and Joseph Conrad.
