E. , 1867 single work novella Tom Adams, of good farming stock, loves a neighbour Ella McClane who is better born but poor, her family having emigrated to Australia after the father's severe financial losses. Tom's mother opposes the marriage but is soon won over when the McClanes assist in the preparations for her daughter's wedding and Ella secretly paints her portrait. The romances of the res of the families and connections are brought in; Ella nurses an ill stockman; Tom is injured in an accident and Ella has a miscarriage. Tom is a cripple, Ella dies and some time later so does Tom. (PB)
1 The Adopted Son : A Tale of the Bush R. E. E. , 1867 single work short story The son of a youthful love and the Indian daughter of an old friend are both lefy by their dying parents to the care of a Victorian squatter, Mr Moore. They become friends, Henry discovering in Cora's governess the woman he thought lost to him. Cora is pursued by the scheming Fred Leeson who frames Henry for a murder in the mistaken belief he is courting Cora. Fred's plan is confounded, however, and he is himself forced to flee the district. Henry is married in Sydney, and returns with his bride to the station where not long after Cora and Mr Moore are wed. (PB)
