1 Love's Effects J. C. , 1898 single work short story romance Light cheery action-packed melodramatic adventure. Set in Gippsland with rich Madge Singleton and Melbourne with poor embroidery artist Lalla Normand as its heroines Lalla's poor mother, and Madge's squatter father James Singleton are their loving parents, and Melbourne's Max Hartmann and artist Ralph Southey their suitors. Dena Delmain, a rich schoolmate of Madge's of Spanish blood and jealous of Ralph's love for Madge, stays with Madge to rest from her musical studies as a vocalist. Whilst fighting off a snake Ralph discovers the secret of her love - but he loves Madge and while comforting Dena helps her to lose her biterness and remain true to their friendship. Dena returns to Melbourne and as a successful singer helps a pantomime girl, Violet Darrell, forced by 'land mania and bank mismanagement' and the death of her father to try and earn a living. She is nearly seduced by a man pretending to give her work as a friend of her father's and who follows her to the theatre. Lalla marries Max and gains public acclaim for her art, teaching students and studying further herself. Dena is proposed to by Madge's father but refuses. Finally she comes to love after many years one of Lalla's prize pupils and later a famous sculptor. They are drawn together trying to solve the murder of his friend, engaged to Violet, who is kidnapped when he is murdered by her former would-be seducer. He is finally discovered and suicides; Violet is found but dies of brain-fever. (PB)
