An Indian heiress' maid takes the place of Nerea Bermyngham when she dies in the train on the trip home, hoping to use her money and marry her cousin Lord Charlton and burying the secret of her past. Beatrix meets Colonel Brand in London and narrowly escapes, Lord Charlton saving her and falling in love with her. Nerea plots against their marriage. Lord Odo Charleton, long-vanished heir to the estate of the Earl of Charlewick, reappears at his father's deathbed to to claim the inheritance all had presumed would go to his dead brother's son, Lord Ronald Charleton. Odo schemes to attract Ronald's finacee, Hellene Clair, by paying her unscrupulous father's debts. Meanwhile Edda Brend is forced to leave her poor guardian's house in Yorkshire and embarks on a journey to discover her mysterious origins which lead her eventually to the estate of the Earl of Chadwick. The return of a long-time suitor Lord Ardlowe prompts her father to urge her to accept him; however, a fire in her apartment reveals that she leaves the house secretly at night. Lord Ardlowe hires a detective to solve the mystery of her disappearances. Meanwhile Lady B travels disguised to a country house to take up her secret life as loving mother, and wife to the banished Geoffrey Trevelyan believed dead by his family but disguised here as an exiled Spanish nobleman. His cousin Lord Ardlowe had plotted against him in his youth to oust him from his uncle's favour and inheritance and has he has been secretly married to Lady B for many years. Their son desires to go to Oxford and their daughter to work as a governess to save their mother from the work life of an actress which they believe she is - a story to account for her many absences. Giralda, the daughter, goes to Wales as a nurse to Geoffrey's uncle without being aware of the relationship. Their mutual regard is pitted against Lord Ardlowe's plots when he discovers the truth.
