Derek Smith has been writing since 1966 and has had an abiding interest in science and science fiction since he was a teenager, so his science fiction writing was a natural progression. His fiction has been published in books, magazines and webzines both in Australia and the United States. Smith describes himself as 'a futurist, someone with a passion for humanity's future and the shaping of it.' His first non-science fiction novel, 'The Boarding House,' was based on his first few months in Australia as a seventeen year old migrant in 1966.
