1 'A Writing Life : Helen Garner and Her Work' by Bernadette Brennan Jan McGuinness , 2017 single work essay
— Appears in: Australian Book Review , May no. 391 2017;
'Who is the I in Helen Garner’s work? This is the question Bernadette Brennan probes by canvassing more than forty years of Garner’s writing and her seventy-four-year existence. It is the proposition Garner’s fans and critics are most exercised by, although some presume to know the answer by reading her fiction as autobiography and her non-fiction as personal opinion.' 1 Vivid Wordsmith Jan McGuinness , 2016 single work review essay
— Appears in: Australian Book Review , November no. 386 2016; (p. 63)
'In his introduction to Bob Ellis: In his own words, Bob’s son Jack says of his father that ‘writing was his reason for being ... and through his writing he saw himself in conversation with the world’. That conversation stopped on 3 April 2016 with Ellis’s death from neuroendocrine cancer. He was seventy-three. For devotees or those merely curious about his life and times, the conversation continues in the pages of this book compiled by his wife and companion of fifty years, Anne Brooksbank.' (Introduction)

1 Being Bob Ellis Jan McGuinness , 2016 single work biography
— Appears in: Meanjin , Spring vol. 75 no. 3 2016; (p. 120-127)
'When Bob Ellis died on 3 April Australia lost its most engaging provocateur. The Labor Party lost the truest of its true believers, the description Ellis coined in 1988 to entitle a miniseries he wrote about the party's history. A decade later he was attracting attention over the pulping of his book Goodbye Jerusalem. Tony Abbott, Peter Costello and their spouses claimed to have been defamed, and then there was the fathering of a baby to scriptwriter Amanda Long, the sum of it sufficient to inspire the cover story in a national magazine. Sadly that magazine folded in the very week of May 2000 when the Ellis story was to appear and it was never published. Its author Jan McGuinness reprises that lost tale here, a time capsule for perhaps the last Australian scallywag, profiled at the height of hes powers.' (Introduction)
