An American digest-size magazine, Vanguard Science Fiction made a promising debut, including among its stories A. Bertram Chandler's 'SOS Planet Unknown' and C. M. Kornbluth's much-anthologized 'Reap the Dark Tide." It also presented articles by L Sprague de Camp and Lester del Rey, which editor James Blish intended to be the first of a series of regular features. Blish was forced to discontinue the magazine after one issue, however, when the distributor withdrew its services.
