Alice Bilari Smith was born at remote Rocklea Station, east of Onslow in the Pilbara region the daugher of Maggie Johnny, a Banyjima woman, and Alex Stewart, a white teamster. Maggie Johnny's second husband George taught Alice Aboriginal ways. She was brought up in a traditional hunter-gatherer community by her family, spending much of her adult life living in the bush and raising a large family after marrying Bulluru Jack Smith. In 1969 Smith and her family moved to Roebourne. Four of her children attended high school in Perth.
