BiographyHistory

Sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for larceny, Johns was transported to Western Australia arriving in Fremantle on 1 May 1853. After gaining a ticket of leave in 1885, Johns turned to criminal activity and was arrested in 1861 for stealing horses in the area of the Avon River known as Moondyne Springs. Jones served several sentences in the Fremantle Gaol and made a number of successful escapes during his imprisonment. Following his release in 1871 and his conditional pardon in 1873, Jones became a respectable citizen in the Vasse district working as a stockman and treefeller. Jones died in the Fremantle asylum where he had been committed due to senility.
