BiographyHistory

Adelaide Ironside was the first Australian professional woman artist and the first Australian born artist to study abroad. She grew up in Sydney and published prose and verse in Sydney newspapers. In 1855 she sailed to Europe and spent several years in Italy where she developed her artistic skills. During a visit to London in 1865, she became a friend of John Ruskin. She died in Rome of tuberculosis at the age of 35.
